There are important safety rules for people who work at night. These rules are for permanent and temporary workers. The rules say night time is the time between 23.00 and 06.00. A 'night worker' is classed as someone who works for at least 3 hours during this period.
The rules say that night workers:
1. Should not work more than 8 hours in any 24 hour period.
2. Can only work more hours if the entire workforce has agreed it is OK.
3. Must be offered a free health check before they begin night work and every few months after that.
4. People under 18 should not work nights unless the government has classed the job as safe for under 18s.
